Stones Original Green Ginger Wine 70cl
Stones Ginger wines was created in 1740 by the Finsbury Distilling company. The wine is made from a secret recipe containing raisins, ginger and a pepper from Australia. Perfect to drink on its own, or ad to a scotch whiskey.
The root of Stones Original Ginger wine dates back to 1740 when a company called the Finsbury Distilling Company was founded in the city of London. During this era the drinks business was booming and distilleries were flourishing across London. There was widespread drunkenness and it was beginning to cause concern and in 1751 an act was passed to prohibit the selling of alcohol direct from distillers to the public.
Finsbury distilling company needed to get a retailer and they chose Joseph Stones, a green grocer in Holborn. They begun to make ginger wine and it was know to be ginger Joe so the company adopted this name for this ginger wine. Made from the finest quality raisins and pure ground ginger, Stone's Ginger wine quickly became the flagship product for the company.
Sales boomed in the 19th century mainly because of an epidemic and many thought that ginger was a cure. It was also believed that it helped with digestion and was an aphrodisiac. The company continued to grow even when Joe retired and his son came into the business as an apprentice sales man, who travelled the world spreading the name of Ginger Joe wines.
