Father's Day: A brief history

Mother's Day has been celebrated for hundreds of years, but Father's Day is relatively new. The day probably originated in the US, and there are several stories of how it started.
The most popular and likely, account suggests it began with a woman named Sonora Louise Smart in Washington. Following her mother's death during childbirth, her father single-handedly raised the family. In 1909, Sonora heard a sermon in church about Mother's Day and thought fathers should also be celebrated. It is believed that the first unofficial Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910, by several local clergymen.
